This policy explains what information Prose Counsel collects, how it is used, and who it goes to. Prose Counsel is software for people handling a court case without a lawyer; it is not a law firm and is operated by an individual, not a law firm.

Information we collect

Account: your email, an optional display name, and a password (stored only as a salted hash), or Google sign-in.
Case information and files you upload or create, which can include financial records, Social Security numbers, and sensitive facts about family, health, immigration or criminal matters.
Questions and answers to and from Counsel and Coach.
Counsel’s case notes about your case, kept so it can answer later questions. Coach keeps no notes about you.
Drafts Counsel creates for you.
Plan and upgrade requests, and a lower plan you choose yourself.
Court records you buy: which docket or document, and when. Court records are bought through one shared account, so each purchase is counted and recorded to keep its use within limits.
For students: school level, school name, school email, and a proof file if you send one.
Basic usage: time active and visits, used for the admin’s usage view.
Security signals: a sign-up bot check, and failed sign-in counts.

How we use it

We use this information to run the service, answer and draft for you, keep accounts secure, verify students, respond to your requests, and meet legal obligations. We do not sell personal information, do not share it for advertising, and do not use it to train AI models.

Redaction before AI or drafts

Before Counsel or Coach reads a text file or your question, and before a draft is saved, full Social Security numbers, taxpayer IDs, and account and card numbers are cut to their last four digits, and birth dates to the year. PDF files are sent as they are, unredacted.

Who information goes to

We share information only with the service providers below, only as needed to run the service. We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising.

Who	What they receive
Amazon Web Services	Hosting, storage, database and email sending for the service.
Our AI provider	The question and any documents sent with it, to produce an answer or draft. Under its commercial terms, it does not train its models on this content.
Google	Only if you choose Sign in with Google.
Cloudflare Turnstile	A bot check when you sign up.
CourtListener	Only the citation text, when you check a citation.
A partner court-records service	Only the court and case or document identifiers needed to fetch a record you ask for.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it (for example, a valid subpoena or court order), or to protect people’s safety or our rights.

Chats and privilege

Chats with Counsel or Coach, and the files you store, are not protected by attorney-client privilege, because no lawyer is involved. Courts have split on whether work product protection applies to this kind of material. You should assume that anything you type could be requested in a lawsuit.

Security

Information is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and encrypted at rest by our cloud provider. Access is limited to your own session; admins can see account and plan information, student requests, and court-record purchases, in order to run the service. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as the law requires.

Retention

Case files stay until you delete them. Deleted files go to a trash for 30 days, and earlier versions of a file can be kept for a limited time so they can be recovered, then are erased.
Counsel’s drafting job records are deleted about 30 days after the job.
Records of court-record purchases, and daily usage totals (time in the app and AI cost), are deleted about 13 months after they were made.
Student proof files are deleted when an admin decides, or after 30 days at the latest. School details are deleted 90 days after student status ends. You can delete your student verification at any time in Settings.
Deleting your account (Settings, then Delete your account) deletes at once your sign-in, Counsel’s case notes, your plan choice and upgrade requests, your student verification and proof, your agreement record, your court-record purchase records and your usage totals. Your case files go to the deleted-files bin and are erased 30 days later. What remains is a record that the account was deleted and when, kept for 24 months under a one-way code made from your email address (not the address itself), so that sign-ins made before the deletion stop working and so we can show the deletion was done. If you can’t sign in, email us and we will delete your account and confirm within 30 days.

Age

You must be 13 or older to use Prose Counsel. If you are 13 to 17, you may use only the Basic plan and the Student plan, and should do so with a parent’s or guardian’s permission; paid plans and Counsel are for adults 18 and older. We ask for your birth month and year once, to check your age. For an adult, we keep only that you are an adult, not the month or year. If you are under 18, we keep the month you turn 18 (from which your birth month and year could be worked out), so your limits lift on their own; once you turn 18, we keep only that you are an adult. If someone says they are under 13, or we learn that someone under 13 has an account, we close it and delete their information at once, keeping only a note that the account is closed until an admin reviews it.

Your choices and rights

See and download your files any time in the app.
Correct or delete information by editing or deleting your files, or by emailing us.
Delete your student verification any time in Settings.
Change to a lower plan any time in Settings. Your files stay.
Delete your account any time in Settings, or by emailing us.

Some states give additional rights, such as the right to know what information we hold, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, or to opt out of the sale of personal information (which we do not do). Email us to use any of these rights and we will respond as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will show the change in the app and ask you to agree again before you keep using Prose Counsel.
